The LAGI 2015–2016 YOUTH PRIZE is open and all materials are available for download.
What are you waiting for? There is a planet to save!
Middle School and High School students around the world are invited to design concepts for artworks that help to power the sustainable city of Santa Monica. Two teams (one middle school and one high school) will each win $3,000 in prize money. All submissions will be in a printed publication, exhibitions, and online portfolio.
They encourage educators and mentors to explore the LAGI TOOLKIT DOWNLOADS where you will find fun and helpful exercises to guide you through the entire process. And please take advantage of their workshop scheduler where you can sign up for a presentation by the LAGI team. They’ll skype into your classroom or be there in person if they happen to be in town.
Also they announce the opening of Pittsburgh’s newest work of public art, Renaissance Gate, on the 7200 block of Frankstown Avenue. It’s the product of the Art+Energy Summer Camp, a collaboration between the Homewood Renaissance Association, the Land Art Generator Initiative, and Conservation Consultants Inc. with help from Underwood Solar Future and Gerhart Engineering.
The August 13th unveiling with Mayor Peduto marked the end of the 6-week program that began on July 6th and which provided twenty kids with an immersive experience in renewable energy science, technology, design, and installation. The final outcome is a 4.1 kWp solar artwork conceptualized and designed by the youth. The campers were even hands on with the construction! Renaissance Gate will help to power the new Homewood Renaissance Association Community Center.
Read more about the project and see lots more photos on website and in articles in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and Inhabitat. Thanks to the Art+Energy Camp supporters, including the Heinz Endowments, Google Community Grants, and the Three Rivers Community Foundation.
