How can artists help us to think about complex issues like the environment?
Cross pollination is a free evening event hosted by Citizen Power Peterborough (UK). It features speakers who bring an extraordinary understanding of wildlife and our relation to it :
– Marcus Coates has an international profile as an artist with his recent work The Trip shown this year at the Serpentine Gallery, and current work on the South Bank (London). In his talk he will show excerpts from Dawn Chorus, a powerful and poignant work made with sound recordist Geoff Sample.
– Andy Holden’s work has received increasing acclaim, most recently at ‘Art Now’ at Tate Britain (London), and his exhibition Chewy Cosmos Thingly Time at Kettle’s Yard (Cambridge) in July 2011.
– Peter Holden worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) for 40 years and has written numerous books on ornithology, including the RSPB Handbook of British Birds. He was awarded an MBE for services to conservation in 2009.
– The Holdens will present their Lecture on Nesting, a collaborative project between father and son exploring the materials, structure and processes involved in the construction of birds’ nests.
– Cross Pollination will include local poet Keely Mills, and Sophie Antonelli, co-director of The Green Backyard.
The event celebrates the work of the RSA Arts & Ecology Centre 2005-2010, and the many cross-disciplinary environmental initiatives in Peterborough both current and unfolding.
Citizen Power is a collaboration between the citizens of Peterborough, the Royal Society Academy (RSA), Arts Council and Peterborough City Council to explore new ways of making the city a better place to live. It includes six interconnected projects : Arts and Social Change : putting art at the heart of the city ; Peterborough Curriculum : connecting what we learn with where we live ; Civic Commons : empowering local people to take action ; Sustainable Citizenship : making green innovation a reality ; Recovery Capital : supporting long term recovery from problem drug and alcohol use ; ChangeMakers : unlocking the hidden wealth of community leaders.
