On November 9, 2011 EcoArt Project presents its creative communication campaign ‘Plastic Vortex 2012′ to raise awareness of plastic waste with a conference, an artistic work-in-progress and an educational section at the Ecomondo Trade Fair in the city of Rimini, Italy.
EcoArt Project’s model is that of a creative platform, committed to the development of cultural and communication initiatives inspired by themes of sustainability, and now presenting Plastic Vortex 2012, an international project that aims to spotlight the world of plastic through the channels of culture.
The name ‘Plastic Vortex’ is inspired by the Pacific Trash Vortex, a huge floating island of waste, mainly plastic, that first formed in the Pacific Ocean in the 1950′s by the opposing action of the ocean’s currents bringing plastic waste to a single point in the ocean where it was trapped and has continued to accumulate. The giant floating island, estimated at 2,500 km in diameter and 30 meters deep, produces a huge area of toxic, dangerous plastic soup that is altering entire ecosystems and life cycles. This little known ecological disaster is only one manifestation of the entire problem, in fact there is an alarming concentration of plastic also in the Mediterranean and Atlantic waters, in actual fact, the Pacific Trash Vortex is simply symptomatic of a state of emergency that affects the entire planet.
The Plastic Vortex 2012 campaign will be developed during the year and will encompass multiple initiatives. It will utilize a creative format that involves three different segments: corporate and institutional, educational and the contemporary art world. The objective is to develop a renewed and broadened awareness of the importance of recycling, waste separation and waste recovery and at the same time stimulate the promotion of the « smart packaging » for the mass consumer products, development of new technologies for more ecologically-minded packaging of goods and the use of eco-friendly materials, such as bio-plastics whenever possible.
The activities will be presented to the press and public at the Ecomondo Fair during the Plastic Vortex Conference that will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 15:00 pm in A6 Oak Hall (1st floor). The meeting is being organized in collaboration with the non-profit organization Learn To Be Free’ and its president Irene Pivetti, under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea. Massimo Pulini, Councillor for Culture and Identity of the Municipality of Rimini and Gianluca Bertazzoli, Manager of Communications and External Relations at COREPLA (National Consortium for the Collection, Recycling and Recovery of Plastic Packaging Waste) will participate in the discussion.
EcoArt Project will also present two contests that will be opened in 2012: Plastic Vortex Click & Ciak 2012, a contest for high school students in collaboration with the non-profit ‘Learn To Be Free’ and the Director General’s Office of the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, as well as the Plastic Vortex Call for Artists 2012, an international competition for artists.
Another Ecomondo feature offered by EcoArt Project will be an artistic installation during the fair (held from November 9 to 12) and located in Hall B7. An area of approximately 700 square meters will host the artistic intervention Plastic Vortex – Art Work in Progress: EcoArt Project artists will have access to all of the various plastic wrap and packaging waste that’s left over from setting up all of the trade fair stands. From this initial ‘mountain’ of plastic, cellophane, bubblewrap, and various other materials, will be born a significant art installation and a new surreal ‘environment’.
